One of the most exciting winter finds may not be seen in the spring with trainer John Sargent taking a cautious approach with Esteban.
In his last race as a three-year-old on Saturday, Esteban was untroubled to win over 2000 metres at Rosehill, with the $2.25 favourite putting 4-3/4 lengths on Magical Stance ($5.50).
He had won his previous three starts by a combined 21 lengths to stamp his quality but Sargent is not getting too carried away just yet.
“It’s very pleasing and this was his biggest test so far,” Sargent said.
“He’s going through his grades and this was still a benchmark 82 race.
“The win will put his rating up into the 80s now and we might give him one more this time or just give him a break.
“He won’t be racing through the spring. He will be an autumn horse.”
Esteban’s winning streak began at Newcastle on June 23, the first time he had been tested at 2000 metres.
Sargent said he had always believed Esteban would be best over this distance and beyond.
The gelding’s mother Nadege is a daughter of 1998 Melbourne Cup runner-up Champagne.
“He has such a high-cruising speed, which is nice to see,” Sargent said.
“He’s not just a one-paced grinding stayer and he is exciting going ahead.”
