El Segundo’s trainer Colin Little says the gelding’s Cox Plate campaign is still on track despite a troublesome fetlock joint.

The son of Pins finished fifth behind Whobegotyou on a hard Moonee Valley track in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

Little said he considered scratching El Segundo but had to run over a mile last Saturday to keep a Cox Plate tilt on track.

“The Moonee Valley track was firmer than a good 3 rating on Saturday,” Little said. “El Segundo pulled up with heat in his joint but there was no real soreness which was a good sign.

“We have had to ice his legs but he’s good. He had a trot and did a bit of work this morning (Thursday) and he’ll be fine for his next run.”

Little said the 2007 Cox Plate winner would have his next run in the Turnbull Stakes on October 3.

“He’s got three weeks until the Turnbull Stakes,” Little said. “He’ll be fine by then.”
