Easy Campese lines up favourite in Saturday's Midway at Kembla Grange

With black type racing on his resume, Easy Campese will face one of his easiest assignments to date, when he contests Saturday’s Midway Handicap at Kembla Grange.

After a gutsy first-up performance that saw the son of Sidestep stick on gamely for third behind the smart Ma And Pa, Sydney trainer John Sargent is confident his gelding is in great order to take out Saturday’s Midway.

“Going back to a Midway should be ideal for him,” Sargent said.

“He’s the highest rated horse in the race hence he’s got the top weight, so I’ve claimed 3kgs with Tyler (Schiller).

“I think he’s a good chance tomorrow. He’s up on speed, if it rains – he loves the wet, so that won’t worry him. He’s got a lot of the bases covered and I expect him to go well.”

Sargent also has four-year-old mare Toostar engaged in the race.

Less favoured by the market, Sargent believes the daughter of All Too Hard is not without a winning hope in the 1400m event.

“She went well at Rosehill last start, but she’ll need a bit of luck from the draw to get over, but she doesn’t mind if it rains either,” Sargent said.

“She ran a cheeky race last time, so she’s in form third up and if she could get a soft run she wouldn’t be the worst.”

Sargent also trains the promising three-year-old filly Ginny Martini.

Not seen since April when finishing midfield in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes, the Rip Van Winkle filly is set to resume on Thursday at Wyong over 1350m with Tommy Berry to pilot.

“She just had a mishap last time in and she missed the Spring,” Sargent said.

“She ran into Coastwatch early and then ran in the Champagne (Stakes) and got knocked over.

“She’ll just have a run or two and then we will give her a short let-up and aim her for the Fillies’ Classic races in the Autumn.

“She’s a promising staying filly and she should sprint well over the 1350m at Wyong. She’ll be very hard to beat first-up.”

As for stable star Four Moves Ahead, Sargent looks forward to welcoming the talented Group 2 winning filly back into his stables on Monday.

Chasing an elusive Group 1, the daughter of Snitzel is mapped to have two runs in the lead up to her grand final in the Surround Stakes (1400m – February 26).
