Palmerbet CEO Grant Palmer is tipping Vega Magic to win The Everest

The first running of the world’s richest turf race, The Everest, has captured the imagination of punters with an intriguing betting affair shaping up on Saturday. For Palmerbet CEO Grant Palmer, the key to finding the winner among 12 of the best sprinters in the land looks to be how each will settle in the run.

“The speed map is always a crucial form analysis tool in horse racing, but its importance in a sprint event with such high stakes like The Everest is even greater”, explained Palmer. “We generally like runners who can adapt to any settling position, and don’t depend on being forward or back in order to run their best.”

This kind of versatility has Palmer squarely in the camp of favourite Vega Magic to claim the race.

“He can go forward and sit just behind the leaders or, if he can’t cross from barrier 10, he can go back and look for cover. He will run out a strong 1200m and goes on top for us.”

Regardless of where the favourite settles, Palmer believes he will need to run down stablemate Redkirk Warrior, who flew first up down the Flemington straight to win the Gr2 Bobbie Lewis over 1200m.

“He went terrific first up and has drawn well. We expect he will go forward and make the rest catch him.”

Fan favourite and champion sprinter Chautauqua will certainly have to climb Everest if he is to make his traditional run from the rear and win, but Palmer isn’t discounting the Grey Flash.

“He’s produced super work through the week and looks set to peak on Grand Final day. He should also get some sting out of the track for first time this preparation which makes him a key player.”

Punters can also expect to see mare English rattling home late in the race and rates as another of Palmer’s top picks.
“The stable must’ve walked under a ladder, she has drawn the outside gate at each start this prep.

Expect her to improve from last start where she looked like she was going to run away with it before topping her run. Off a hot tempo she will get home hard, but we think she’ll just miss.”

Grant Palmer’s Everest Picks:

1 – Vega Magic
2 – Chautauqua
3 – Redkirk Warrior
4 – English
