In-form Toby Edmonds has again showed his ability to get the best out of former southern states-trained horses with his winning double at Doomben.

Edmonds trained his fifth winner for the week when La Spiagga won following an earlier victory by his former smart two-year-old Prompt Return.

La Spiagga did his early racing for Bjorn Baker in Sydney but came to Edmonds last year where he has since won five races.

“He only won his maiden at Ballina but he has continued to improve. I suppose in some way he has now over-achieved by winning a Saturday open handicap,” Edmonds said.

“I thought his run at Eagle Farm (when sixth) last start was OK and his last 100 metres was good. But we won’t be getting too carried away.”

Prompt Return won the 2014 Group Three Maribyrnong Plate for Danny O’Brien before being transferred to Chris Waller at Rosehill where he failed to win.

“The opposition is obviously a bit weaker up here. He is a big strong horse and I am looking forward to getting him out to 1200 metres,” Edmonds said.

The double took Edmonds to six metropolitan winners for the season which has him in third place early in the season behind Robert Heathcote and Tony Gollan.

Edmonds also trained a winner at Eagle Farm the previous Saturday, at Ipswich on Friday and at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Premier jockey Jeff Lloyd continued his good run with a double on Prompt Return and Monsieur Gustave who is raced in the colours of 2009 Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready.

Monsieur Gustave, a half brother to Townsville Cup winner Outraged, was originally trained by Jason McLachlan but has been with Caloundra trainer Darryl Hansen for his past two wins.

“He is pretty promising and I am looking forward to having a lot of fun with him,” Hansen said.

O’Reilly Cyrus ($5) came from second last at the 600m to finish second but it may not be enough to get her into the Group One Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 10.
