We caught up with seven of the top jockeys riding at Royal Randwick to get their thoughts on the horses they will be riding in the four Group Ones.
Telperion (Sires Produce): 1400 metres is perfect. Obviously we would like the cut in the ground. He is a very good galloper and he deserves favouritism and he will be thereabouts.
Tally (Derby): Lovely horse and has a great set of lungs on him. He is a real stayer in the making and he is real hard to beat.
Exosphere (TJ Smith): Going really well. He didn’t show his true form down in Melbourne with no luck so hopefully he will turn his luck around.
Bow Creek (Doncaster): He is a knock out horse but there is a big hurdle to get over come and that is Winx.
Yankee Rose (Sires Produce): Her run in the Slipper was great, with another 50 metres she would’ve won so the step up in distance plays right into her hands. If she brings the same form to this race she should be hard to beat.
Gold Ambition (Derby): I think he had a tough trip last start and tired so you can forgive him for that. He ran very well the start before at Randwick but that was over a mile. The 2400 looks as if it could be a test so we will need all the favours.
Fell Swoop (TJ Smith): He is going great. Steps up to WFA which will test him but he is a horse on the rise and could give it a big shake.
Kermadec (Doncaster): I think he can go back to back. He pulled up having a big blow after his last run and he’ll be fitter this time and gets a slight swing in the weights against Winx. It’s always a great race and this year will be no different.
Best Ride: Depending on the track it is Yankee Rose.
Sparkle (Sires Produce): She is looking for the 1400 metres and she has blinkers on and that will definitely enhance her chances however she has to step up as it is a massive step up in grade.
Tavago (Derby): He is a nice type. He got a long way back in the New Zealand Derby and ran home in very good sectionals. He is a good horse and they have a lot of time for him. From a good barrier he will settle a lot closer and I think he is one of the chances.
Chautauqua (TJ Smith): I think he will be very hard to beat. He has drawn the right barrier for him and he hands soft or dry ground. I think he is the best sprinter in the World so he should be hard to beat again.
First Seal (Doncaster): She has blinkers on as well. She worked in them on Tuesday morning and was very happy with that. Big weight drop and has drawn a good barrier and will get the right run and if she is good enough she will be there on the line.
Best Ride: Chautauqua.
Good Standing (Sires Produce): He will be more suited over 1400 metres than he was over 1200 in the Golden Slipper.
Vanbrugh (Derby) He ran well in the Guineas. He will have to improve to turn the tables on Tarzino but I think he is certainly on track. He is a genuine place chance.
Delectation (TJ Smith): He is a good horse. I think he is better than a knockout horse. He is better suited up the straight. His form isn’t as good around the bend but it looks to me like a high pressure race which is just what suits him.
Winx (Doncaster): It is pretty self explanatory I think.
Best Ride: Winx
Rivo Boy (Sires Produce): Obviously I do not know much about him as I just picked him up on acceptances but Anthony Cummings is pretty good at finding maidens and putting them in Group Ones and he would not be there unless he showed him something at home.
Sovereign Nation (Derby): I do not know much about him but I see Michael Walker rode him last Saturday and he is on the back up and his run was ok. The 2400 metres should suit. Tarzino is going to be hard to beat but he deserves his chance in the race.
Terravista (TJ Smith): I am looking forward to riding him. He obviously had a little set back and he missed that race and he went to the handicap and I thought his run was ok without being great. Goes back to Randwick and he ran well in the race last year and on his best he is one of our best sprinters.
Happy Clapper (Doncaster): I am looking forward to riding him as this has been his grand final the whole time and with 50.5kg on his back so he drops 9kg. Winx is going to be terribly hard to beat but he deserves his change in the race. If Winx isn’t on her game then he can beat the rest of them.
Best Ride: It is a hard days racing and I am happy just getting on mate.
Chimboraa (Sires Produce): He is drawn a bit awkward which might not be too much drama from the 1400 at Randwick. It is a pretty fair start and you can pretty much sit anywhere and he will be in a winning position and 1400 metres is going to suit.
Etymology (Derby): His run in the Rosehill Guineas was good and he is drawn well and drawn around the main chances particularly Tarzino so he going to get a nice run and he should be in the finish.
Knoydart (TJ Smith): He has been trialling well and is on a bit of an upward spiral and he has drawn a bit awkward but he will get back and settle and should be hitting the line hard.
Alfden (Derby): I don’t know to much about her as I haven’t gone back to look at her replays yet but looks a bit of a roughie.
Boss Lane (TJ Smith): He loves Randwick. It is a stiff test for him at WFA against these horses but he is racing in career best form.
Ecuador (Doncaster): Drops in weight and always performs better at Randwick and is a good lightweight hope.
Best Ride: Perignon in the PJ Bell Stakes (Race 5)
