Criterion, bought as a yearling to win a Golden Slipper, confirmed his staying prowess with a slogging victory in the $2 million ATC Australian Derby at Randwick on Saturday.
Ridden by Hugh Bowman, Criterion added the Derby to his Rosehill Guineas win.
Bowman produced an almost identical ride to his Guineas triumph, cutting through on the inside of runners as the field straightened for the finish.
It allowed Criterion to join Hooked and Tupac Amaru in fighting out the finish before he asserted his superiority from the 200m.
Tupac Amaru ($16) made a long run from the 600m to hold down second with Hooked ($31) finishing third.
“We bought him for the Slipper,” trainer David Payne said.
“It just shows you there are no rules in racing.”
Criterion started favourite at $2.90.
