Flemington trainer Danny O’Brien has confirmed Craig Williams as the Caulfield Cup rider for pre-post Vigor in next month’s feature.
Vigor will carry 51kg in the Caulfield Cup, the son of O’Reilly exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot after winning the Group II Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.
Speaking at the official launch of the Melbourne spring carnival, Williams said his ability to ride at light weights was the key to securing the mount on Vigor.
“Being able to ride at 51kg puts me in the frame for some good lightweight rides,†Williams said.
“Danny asked me what I was doing in the Caulfield Cup recently at Sandown and I was only too pleased to ride him.
“Danny’s got a great record in the Caulfield Cup. Vigor’s a great horse with no weight and it’s a great ride to have.â€
O’Brien will run Vigor in Saturday’s Group II Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington to round off what O’Brien called an “excellent preparation†for the Caulfield Cup.
“Earlier in the spring we had some pressure to get him into the Caulfield Cup,†O’Brien said. “He won the Makybe and got himself a Caulfield Cup start which made life a lot easier.
“Now he’s guaranteed a run in the race, all we have to do is make sure we keep his form going on an upward plane.â€
Damien Oliver will ride Vigor in the Turnbull Stakes but has been booked to ride the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe in the Caulfield Cup.
