Coolmore’s part-owner Tom Magnier went to $2million for the talented Gr 1 winning mare Srikandi at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on the weekend.
And he may have a bargain.
But before all that, this mare Srikandi (Dubawi-Raining) has been one of those horses you just dream about.
A regular instant-teller – giving her owners money left right and centre.
For instance she won $2,377,600 in prizemoney from her 9 wins which included the Gr 1 Stradbroke Handicap, and the Gr 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.
Then when she went to stud, her first baby, by Snitzel sold for $400,000.
Then her next baby, by I Am Invincible fetched $600,000.
And now this $2million tag.
She is in foal to a rather less controversial Kentucky Derby winner in American Pharoah.
Naturally, if either of her first 2 babies fires up into Black Type company, this $2m price tag will be a bargain.
Aloisia (Azamour-Queen Boudicca) was not in foal but she too went for a big sum fetching $1.2million to the bid of partners Hilldene Farm and Peter Ford Thoroughbreds.
Considering she was passed in as a yearling when the reserve of $60k wasn’t met, her faith in her owners was rewarded by her winning at Gr 1 level and earning $790,000 in prizemoney as well as this latest sale price.
One mare who was in foal who was also a big winner at the sale for her owners was the blue hen producer Maastricht (Mastercraftsman-Cat Shmea). James Bester buying for a client, shared in the purchase with Coolmore. They went to $2,250,000 for her.
Maastricht cost $220,000 as a yearling. She was a multiple Gr 2 placegetter and earned $137,135 as a racehorse.
But as a broodie she gave us the extraordinarily gifted Gr 3 winner and multiple Gr 1 placegetter Loving Gaby.
And she was purchased in foal to the great I Am Invincible.
Away from the big dollars, Boomer Bloodstock in partnership with Daandine Stud may have snared the best deal.
They landed the 2YO winner and stakes placed Crossing The Abbey (Helmet-Music In The Park) for just $340,000.
She is foal to Gr 1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and if the foal is a handsome, strong-boned colt, they could get that all back in one fell swoop.
