Jason Collett wants a piece of the Yankee Rose fairytale, racing’s feel-good story of the Sydney autumn carnival.

A group of diverse first-time owners are devout believers in the $10,000 filly.

And David Vandyke has overcome drug addiction and mental health issues to be a Group One-winning trainer.

Now Collett gets a chance to write himself into the script as the jockey who scored his first win at the top level on Yankee Rose in the Champagne Stakes.

“It’s quite a fairytale,” Collett said.

Collett admits riding the filly – a short-priced favourite to win the race – has some expectation attached.

“There is that pressure,” he said.

“But you just sort of half try to block it out really.”

Hong Kong-based Zac Purton, who is unavailable for Saturday, rode Yankee Rose to victory in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and to second in the Golden Slipper.

On the back of those performances, the filly is a $1.40 chance for the Champagne.

“This is where the mental side of it probably comes into it,” Collett said.

“You need to be strong there.”

Yankee Rose will be extended to 1600m for the first time as she attempts to win two legs of Sydney’s two-year-old triple crown.

Collett knows his job will be to make sure the filly is relaxed in the run.

“She’s got to see out the mile – that’s number one,” Collett said.

“As long as she’s relaxed, she’ll have the turn of foot at the finish which everyone knows is pretty good.”

Yankee Rose will be the first of two chances Collett has to break through for his elite win at Randwick on Saturday.

He will ride Rebel Dane in the All Aged Stakes a little more than an hour after Yankee Rose.

It has been more than three years since Collett rode Rebel Dane in a race, but he partnered the horse to four wins and one second from the first six starts of the horse’s career.

Collett said Rebel Dane should appreciate getting out to 1400m and expects him to be competitve as the horse looks for his second Group One victory.
