Race caller Brett Davis summed up the Listed Adelaide Guineas the best when he said as CHERRY TORTONI (Night Of thunder – Tortoni) eased down near home, “he is a different class.”
Todd Pannell rode the Victorian who was a $2 chance with Sportsbet and he rode him as if he was Winx.
After jumping out well Pannell then allowed him to just find his rhythm without any urgings at all.
He stayed out of trouble in the three wide lane all the way and when the confident hoop kicked him up, he circled the field with consummate ease then just exploded away.
He won the 1600m race by 3 lengths with his head on his chest from CASINO SEVENTEEN (Casino Prince – Tikal) who came from last at the bend with the filly SPOONING (Ocean Park – Romancing) who had led from barrier rise battling on for 3rd spot.
She looks to have a future as this was only her 3rd race start.
But, it was all about Cherry Tortoni who is kinda telling his connections with this win now that he isn’t a stayer but a sprinter miler after today.
This was his 5th win from 13 starts and although he runs like he can stay his failures have been over trips.
Not today, however. Trainer Patrick Payne brought him back from an unsuccessful 2000m trip to Sydney in stakes company and freshened him for this.
And didn’t he revel in it.
He destroyed them, which when you consider he is a Gr 1 placegetter, also at this trip, wasn’t all that unexpected.
The big chestnut now has won nearly $800,000 in prize money
