Chad Schofield is being assessed to determine whether he needs surgery on two fractures in his neck suffered in a three-horse fall at Cranbourne on Sunday.
Schofield, who won the Queensland Derby aboard Sonntag a day earlier, was one of three jockeys taken to Dandenong Hospital after the fall.
Apprentice Ben Thompson was kept in overnight with concussion while Steven Arnold was discharged with bruising.
Schofield has been transferred to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.
Victorian Jockeys’ Association representative Des O’Keefee says the prognosis is for a full recovery.
“Chad has suffered two fractures in his neck but the scans showed no spinal cord damage,” O’Keeffe said.
“They are deciding today whether can get away with a neck brace or needs surgery.
“The long term prognosis is for a 100 per cent recovery.”
O’Keeffe said Thompson was expected to go home on Monday.
Schofield’s jockey father Glyn is also out of action after suffering facial fractures in a mishap at Warwick Farm last month when a horse he was on reared up and hit him in the face.
Thompson, who has only been riding for two weeks, rode a winner at Kilmore on his first day.
