Rosehill has won out over an eight-hour drive to outback NSW for jockey Tony Cavallo.

In what will be a rare city appearance, Cavallo will swap the grass roots atmosphere of Saturday’s Cobar Cup meeting for the chance to ride a winner in Sydney for Paul Perry.

His mounts for the Newcastle trainer include Ghost Protocol in the Lord Mayors Cup as well as Gloaming Stakes placegetter Tatoosh in the More Than Ready Handicap.

Cavallo answered an SOS from the Perry to go to Taree a month ago and after a winning double the rides have kept coming from one of provincial racing’s biggest stables.

“It’s sort of snowballed from there and while it’s going well Paul’s been giving me rides,” Cavallo said.

“I’ve been doing the country non-TABs on a Saturday. I’ve been skirting out wide. I don’t mind getting to those meetings.

“I thought I would have been at Newcastle, maybe Cobar. But things were going a bit better and I was at Newcastle last weekend.

“Then Paul rang and asked if I would like to stay in town for three or four rides so it will be up the road for once.”

Cavallo will head west from his Randwick base on Sunday to ride at Gunnedah before staying somewhere overnight before going to Dubbo on Monday.

“People say I’m mad doing all the driving but it’s good wages,” he said.

“You stay in a hotel for sixty bucks a night, so what? You’re not going to make the money sitting at home.

“These days I go where I get the most opportunities. I’m a bit older now. There’s a lot of jockeys in Sydney and I never push for the city any more.

“You sort of know your limits a bit, but I actually enjoy it, getting out to the country tracks.”

Ghost Protocol is a $61 chance in the Lord Mayors Cup, but the import arrived at long odds in a benchmark race at Rosehill in March.

Tatoosh returns to a middle distance after being a victim of a slowly run 1500m-race two weeks ago.

And Cavallo is hoping the three-year-old can find the spring form that helped him notch three successive placings at stakes level.

Godolphin import Havana Cooler and the Chris Waller-trained Lady Le Fay hold an early call at the top of market for the Lord Mayors Cup.
