Trent Busuttin is realistic when it comes to setting the team he trains with partner Natalie Young tasks in town.
With three city winners for the season, Busuttin says there’s little point taking horses to town if they’re not ready.
“We haven’t had a lot of runners in town to be fair,” Busuttin said.
“We’ve had three winners and a heap of seconds but you’ve got to put them where they can win.”
Busuttin is hoping he has placed debut Mornington winner Montaser in the right race at Caulfield on Saturday when he runs in the Tile Importer Handicap.
He said the colt had gained a lot from the experience over 1200m and expects the step up to 1440m on Saturday to be ideal.
“It’s obviously a step up from a maiden at Mornington to a race in town, but they’re all in the same boat,” Busuttin said.
“I don’t think there’s any stand-outs in the race by any means.
“There’s some nicely bred horses in there for some good trainers, so I’m sure they’ll go well.
“But the extra trip is going to suit my bloke the way he got through the line even though he did a few things wrong.”
Busuttin and Young will also be represented by Shenandoah in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap.
Shenandoah raced in Queensland during the winter carnival and will be lining up for her fourth run back after a spell.
Busuttin said the now four-year-old ran well behind handy three-year-old Almighty at Sandown last start but fears she might find the 1700m too short on Saturday.
“She’s probably looking for further now but she’s not quite fit enough to step out over 2000 metres,” Busuttin said.
“Once she gets up to 2000 she’ll be hard to beat, but she’ll run well tomorrow.”
