Legendary Australian sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney has received another major honour, with the South Australian Jockey Club announcing that The Goodwood will permanently carry his name.
The announcement came on the same night McAvaney was inducted into the South Australian Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, adding further recognition to his decades-long contribution to the sport.
The $1 million Group 1 sprint, traditionally staged at Morphettville in May, will now be known as The McAvaney Goodwood.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas was among those celebrating McAvaney’s achievements at Saturday night’s SA Racing Awards, taking part in the ceremony recognising the broadcaster’s contribution to racing in the state.
McAvaney remains closely involved with South Australian racing through Seven’s coverage of the Adelaide Racing Carnival.
The carnival is staged from late April into early May and features four $1 million Group 1 races across a three-week period, with The McAvaney Goodwood among its headline events.
