Weir is yet to launch up north but is certainly thinking of his team

After yet another successful Warrnambool carnival, champion trainer Darren Weir is refocusing his attention interstate.

The Adelaide carnival is in full swing while the Brisbane winter carnival is in its infancy.

Weir is yet to launch up north but is certainly thinking of his team.

One of last year’s combatants in Brisbane was High Church who is making his return following an injury enforced lay off.

The Irish-bred seven-year-old runs first-up in the Living Legend R E ‘Mick’ Mallyon Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on Saturday.

High Church won last year’s Warrnambool Cup before embarking on interstate travel which led to a third behind Single Gaze in the P J O’Shea Stakes at Doomben in June.

He hasn’t been sighted since after fracturing his off fore knee.

“He hurt himself in the paddock but he’s good now,” Weir said.

“He’s going to need racing but the plan is to try and get up to Brisbane again.

“We’ve just got to get him racing again and see how he goes but he’s coming along alright.”

High Church has been prepared from Weir’s Warrnambool base and has galloped at nearby country tracks in preparation for his return.

To be ridden by Brad Rawiller, High Church is rated a $10 chance for his return in which Magic Consol is the $2.90 favourite.

Weir will rely on Land Of Plenty in the Australian Trainers’ Association Handicap (1400m) after withdrawing Raw Impulse to contest the Carbine Club Handicap (1600m) at Morphettville.

Land Of Plenty was successful at Bendigo before running an unlucky third under Ben Allen at Caulfield over 1400m on April 21.

“I don’t think there was much he could have done last time,” Weir said.

“He rode him well but it was an unfortunate thing that happens in racing.

“The horse is in good shape and should run well.”

Punters expect Land Of Plenty to be hard to beat with the gelding $2.40 favourite.
