Brenton Avdulla has put the disappointment of his sacking from Secret Admirer behind him and grasped the opportunity to ride Polish Knight against her in the Warwick Stakes.

The young jockey has ridden Secret Admirer in 15 of her 16 starts but he has been replaced on the Grahame Begg-trained mare this campaign with Corey Brown to ride her in Saturday’s Group Two Warwick Stakes (1400m).

“It’s obviously different,” Avdulla said of not being on the horse that has provided him with two of his three Group One successes including his first in the 2010 Flight Stakes.

“She’s been a very good horse to me and I wish (owner) John Muir and Grahame all the best with her.

“But hopefully I’ve found a horse that can take me somewhere this carnival.

“One door closes and another one opens, I’m just looking at it that way. And hopefully in time there’s a time to get back on her.”

Polish Knight rose to prominence in the autumn with his Group Two Tulloch Stakes (2000m) win at Rosehill a week before he finished just a short neck second to Ethiopia in the Group One Australian Derby (2400m).

Avdulla rode Polish Knight in the Tulloch Stakes but missed out on the Derby ride through suspension.

While the Warwick Stakes distance is short of Polish Knight’s best, Avdulla is looking forward to the four-year-old’s spring return at Warwick Farm and hopes to stick with the promising stayer as he heads towards the Caulfield Cup.

Trained by John Hawkes and his sons Michael and Wayne, Polish Knight is on the fourth line of betting at $26 in early markets for the Caulfield Cup in October.

“Obviously there is no firm commitment there with him from the Hawkes team but I’m more than happy to stay with him for as long as I can,” Avdulla said.

“Hopefully on Saturday he can do something for me and I’m able to stick with him in the carnival.”

Avdulla will also reunite with the Allan Denham-trained filly Ichihara in the Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).

He was aboard the speedy Ichihara for wins at her first two starts at Wyong and Warwick Farm before the filly was partnered by Brown to win the Magic Night Stakes and finish a luckless third in the Kindergarten Stakes.

“She’s going to find a strong race on Saturday with Nechita and those sorts of horses but I know she’s going to be in it for a long way,” Avdulla said.
