The colours made famous by Bonecrusher have been carried to victory on a Sandown winner.
Spreadeagled sported the silks of cream, brown sash, striped sleeves and cap to a narrow win in the second race on Wednesday.
A champion galloper during the 1980s, Bonecrusher won 18 of his 44 starts including the 1986 Cox Plate after staging a two-horse war with fellow New Zealander Our Waverley Star.
Spreadagled was having his first start for Robert Smerdon after doing his early racing in New Zealand for Shaun Ritchie, the son of Bonecrusher’s trainer Frank Ritchie.
Ridden by Dwayne Dunn, Spreadagled ($7.50) scored by a long neck over the $2.50 favourite Septamore with Zandarral ($4.40) 1-3/4 lengths away third.
Windsor Park Stud bred Spreadeagled and sold the son of Mastercraftsman to Peter Mitchell, the owner of Bonecrusher.
“It was great to see those colours win again in Melbourne,” Windsor Park’s Mike Moran said.
Moran said Ritchie always held a good opinion of Spreadeagled, rating him a potential Guineas horse as a three-year-old.
Smerdon has had previous success with Bonecrusher’s colours, winning an Adelaide race with Saturn Rock in 2013.
