Mike Moroney is finally happy to take Blackwolf Run back to the racetrack

Trainer Mike Moroney is finally happy to take Blackwolf Run back to the racetrack more than a year after he made his debut.

The three-year-old lines up in the VOBIS Gold Carat (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, 13 months after his first start at the same course.

A pulled muscle, a gelding operation and a growth spurt have stopped Blackwolf Run from racing.

Blackwolf Run finished third behind Cao Cao and Kedleston over 1000m in November last year, but did things wrong.

“He had a bit of a bad experience at Moonee Valley,” Moroney said.

“He missed the jump and Patrick (Moloney) gave him a bit of a dig and went through and led.

“He wanted to do that when we were getting him ready for the autumn and he ended up pulling a muscle behind.

“We got him over that, brought him back but we weren’t happy with the way he was going, so we stopped again and gelded him.

“We brought him back for the spring but he looked ordinary so I tipped him out again.

“That’s why he’s had such a long break.”

The stopping and starting has had the desired effect with Blackwolf Run being more tractable in his work.

“I think he’s starting to work out what he’s doing now,” Moroney said.

“The barrier draw (2) is a big help and he should be able to get some cover.”

Moroney will also be represented by Lord Barrington on Saturday in the Powerflo Solutions Handicap.

Lord Barrington disappointed at his last start over 1300m at Sandown on December 2, but Moroney said their were excuses.

“Patrick is back on him and he knows him well,” Moroney said.

“If he flies the gates he’ll put himself right in the race and that’s how he races best.

“He was a bit slow away last time and went forward, then his rider (Mitch Aitken) changed his mind but couldn’t stop him and got caught four and five-wide and that was the end of him.

“It was ugly to watch but I can completely understand.”
