The second foal of unbeaten Black Caviar has finished out of the placings at his debut at Sandown but didn’t disappoint those associated with the colt.

Prince Of Caviar, ridden by Luke Nolen, was sent out third favourite at $5.50 in finishing fourth in Saturday’s Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap (1200m), beaten 4-1/4 lengths by Scottish Rogue.

Black Caviar was unbeaten in her 25 starts in which she was ridden to victory by Nolen on 22 occasions.

“If you don’t look at the pedigree page you would say it was a terrific run for a first timer,” Nolen said.

“He’s probably got some unfair pressure on him but I think he’ll shape up as a three-year-old next autumn.”

Nolen said Prince Of Caviar stood like he was going to ping the gates, but was away evenly and then slow to muster.

He said after settling last it was mathematically impossible to win from that position off a moderate speed.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the two-year-old would now go to the paddock and return for a spring campaign.

Hawkes was encouraged by Prince Of Caviar’s composure at his first racetrack appearance.

“He saddled up perfect, he came into the yard perfect and just got a bit jig-joggy before Luke got on him,” Hawkes said.

“They’re all big things as a trainer you look at from an attitude point of view.

“He had shown all those things at home but I’ve been in this situation before where you bring big expensive colts to the races and they are a mess come race time because they’ve lost the plot.

“He’s got a great attitude, he listens to you and I’m really happy with what he’s done.

“The monkey’s off his back but I’m still happy to train him and I want him in the paddock so we can get him back for the spring.”
