John Sadler harbours concerns Bengal Cat may struggle at 2000m but his son holds no such fears after her all-the-way win at Caulfield.
Bengal Cat booked a trip to Adelaide for the Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville next month with her win in the VOBIS Gold Reef on Saturday when ridden by Tom Sadler.
Backing up from a Sandown win last week and sent out favourite, Bengal Cat ($3.10) held off Unbreakable ($16) by a length with Tarquin ($3.70) 1-1/4 lengths away third.
“She had no peace at all today but in the last 200 metres she kept finding another gear,” young Sadler said.
“It didn’t feel like she was stopping on the line and the 2000 (metres), at this stage, if she had a soft run, she should be strong through the line.”
Sadler’s father said Bengal Cat deserved her shot at the Group One race in Adelaide after describing the performance as a good, strong win despite his distance concerns.
“There’s quite a doubt about her running a mile and a quarter but she should run a good, strong 1800 metres,” Sadler said.
“But I’m sure she’s worth taking over for it.”
