Another Melbourne Cup contender has opted out of running in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup with connections setting their sites on the Autumn carnival for the 5-year-old mare.
The Michael Kent trained Abbey Marie is currently 25th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry but was likely to get a start with news earlier this morning that Bendigo Cup winner Qewy would not be taking his place in the field of 24 and with the Lloyd Williams trained Gallante in doubt for the race.
The 2016 Australasian Oaks winner was a $41 chance in Melbourne Cup markets.
The news means International galloper Thomas Hobson moves into 24th in order of entry for the Melbourne Cup Field but will need Gallante to pull out or the Lexus Stakes to be won by either Ecuador or Havana Cooler who both aren’t nominated for the Cup.
The news comes after Godolphin announced Qewy would not run in the race following his Bendigo Cup win.
