Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed has made a promising season return with a closing third in the Group Three Spring Stakes at Morphettville.
The mare encountered traffic problems in Saturday’s feature and got going late but ran out of time to pick up the leaders over 1200 metres.
The well-supported Happy Trails ($5.50 to $4.20) won the race from Gossip Girl ($10) by a head with favourite Southern Speed ($3) a further three-quarters of a length away.
Trainer Leon Macdonald is keen to give the mare a chance to defend the Caulfield Cup depending on how well she is weighted but hasn’t ruled out a tilt at the Cox Plate.
