New Zealand stayer Showcause is out of the Sydney Cup after a disappointing run in last Saturday’s Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at Randwick.
Trainer Frank Ritchie told Hawkes Bay Today that the horse would return to New Zealand for a spell.
“He broke out [sweated up] twice after cooling off, so he’s obviously gone over the top,” said Ritchie.
“Yet I was as sure as I could be that he was in great shape before the race.”
Showcause will return for the spring, where bigger riches may await.
Ritchie has said in the past that he would like to target the Melbourne Cup with Showcause, given his record at 3200m.
