On March 16th we will see the inaugural running of the $5m All Star Mile at Flemington but unfortunately the name doesn’t truly reflect the quality of race.
The name All Star Mile suggests racing fans will get to watch the best milers or thereabouts battle it out for a prize purse worthy of the quality of horses but sadly due to it being at WFA conditions we will get to see a handful of horses fight out the finish with a massive gap to the rest of the field.
This begs the question to the naming of the race and whether it needs a change? Perhaps The Popularity Mile or the likes? That would be closer to the truth.
I don’t want to disrespect connections but horses like Urban Ruler, Balf’s Choice, Man Of His Word, Mr Money Bags, Foundry, Moss ‘n’ Dale aren’t and simply will never be ‘stars’ so calling them so is disrespectful to racing greats which have been given the title.
Congratulations to connections for getting a horse in the race, i am not suggesting they should not be in it, but it’s not an All Star Field and on how the field is assembly with an open voting system it probably never will be thus a name change surely is in order?
If Racing Victoria want to keep the current voting system, here is my suggestion. Call it The Popularity Mile, reduce the prize money to $1m, give back the saving of $4m into maiden races in Victoria and make it at handicap conditions.
