It’s that time of year again when there is an air of excitement building ahead of Australia’s biggest race the Melbourne Cup but once again the same debate is always brought into the spot light and that is the Melbourne Cup and emergencies.
The Melbourne Cup is made up of 24 spots with horses from all over the world heading to Australia to try and win the iconic race but many won’t get a start after failing to get into the final field so when a horse is scratched the debate to why there are no emergencies always gets brought up because there are a set of connections who in pretty much every other race in Australia would have a runner in the race.
Despite it being 2017 the issue with emergencies in the Melbourne Cup is due to the costs involved in upgrading the TAB terminals across Australia to be able to have more than 24 spots for horses. The deal between the Racing Vic and the VRC with the TAB would mean they would have to fork out the money to upgrade the systems which to this date obviously hasn’t been done.
We feel it’s time to get this done, and done ASAP so that we have emergencies in the race from next year.
