The Victoria Derby is one of the oldest horse races in Australia, with a history that stretches back to 1855.  This classic Group 1 race is held at Flemington Racecourse as part of the Melbourne spring racing carnival, on the first day in the lead up to the prestigious Melbourne Cup.  Held under set weight conditions, the Victoria Derby is held on the same day as other Group 1 races;  the Myer Classic, the Mackinnon Stakes, and the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The Victoria Derby is worth a total of $1,500,000 in prize money, which is one of the reasons it always manages to attract a high quality field.  The field is limited to 16 horses for this historic race, with the Group 2 AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley being one of the important lead up events.  With a history that goes back so far, the Victoria Derby has seen lots of notable horses over the line throughout the years.

Phar Lap won the Victoria Derby in 1929, and was noted as the greatest derby winner of all time.  However, a number of other famous horses have also won this event, including Fireworks who won this race twice in 1867 and 1868, Poseidon in 1906, Tulloch in 1957, and Efficient in 2006.  The Victoria Derby was originally run at the traditional Derby length of 2400 metres, changing to 2500 metres in 1973.  This race was also directly promoted to Group 1 event in 1979, with Big Print being the first Group 1 winner.

The 2011 Victoria Derby was won by Sangster, who was trapped early but gained control in the final stages ahead of Induna in second position and Sabrage in third.
