* Named in honour of Randwick’s most famous trainer the late Tommy Smith whose daughter Gai Waterhouse won the race with Phoenix Park in 2002, Shamekha in 2005 and Bentley Biscuit in 2007.
* First run in 1997 when won by Mahogany.
* Elevated to Group One status in 2005.
* Some outstanding sprinters have won the race including Mahogany, La Baraka (1998), Phoenix Park, Spinning Hill (2003), Bentley Biscuit, Apache Cat (2008), Takeover Target (2009) and Melito (2010).
* Randwick trainer Pat Webster prepared successive winners – Ab Initio (1999) and Shy Hero (2000).
* No trainer with a runner on Saturday has won the race before.
