The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) deputy chief executive Sue Lloyd-Williams has announced she will retire after the 2011 Melbourne Cup carnival.
Long recognised as a pioneer for women in racing, Lloyd-Williams joined the VRC in 1979 as assistant publicity officer.
In 1988 she became general manager-marketing and following 13 years in that role she was appointed deputy chief executive, a position she has successfully held for the past nine years.
VRC chairman Michael Burn paid tribute to Lloyd-Williams, acknowledging her exceptional contribution to the VRC and the integral role she had played in the growth of the international standing of the Melbourne Cup carnival as a world-class event.
“Sue has been an outstanding executive during a long career at the VRC,” Burn said.
“She has been innovative and energetic and has applied her unique combination of skills to be a vital contributor to the success of the club.
“She will be greatly missed and will leave with our sincere thanks and very best wishes.”
To commemorate her contribution to the club, Lloyd-Williams has been awarded a life membership of the VRC.
