Racing NSW stewards will recommend to the Newcastle Jockey Club that the false rail from the 900-metre chute at Broadmeadow be repositioned following an inquiry into a three-horse fall at the track on March 5.
Three riders, apprentices Jake Hull and Alex Stokes and jockey Jeff Penza, were all taken to hospital after the fall but escaped serious injury.
Stewards concluded their inquiry at Newcastle races on Thursday and found that Kaulana, ridden by Hull, had been forced inside the line of the running rail when the field linked with the course proper because of pressure from Esprit Lad, who ran in.
Kaulana was unable to avoid the heels of Last Day Friday and fell with Stokes’ mount Miover, who was following Kaulana, going down over the top of that horse.
Penza was then dislodged from A Roaring Success after being unable to avoid the fallen horses.
Stewards have made several recommendations about the positioning of the false rail and, in particular, when the permanent rail is moved out from the true position.
The club’s racing manager, John Curtis, said it would work closely with the stewards to ensure their recommendations were adhered to.
