1. Heart of Dreams
Returned to racing after an eleven month break with an encouraging fifth in the P B Lawrence here a fortnight ago. Can only be better for that run, saves his best for this track but has a horrible draw to contend with.
Odds: $10.00
2. Voila Ici
An overseas runner who has joined the Moody yard and is making his Australian debut. Hasn’t raced below 1800m and hasn’t won a race less than 2000m. From his wide draw, happy to have a look at him here.
Odds: $26.00
3. Sincero
Only had three starts in the Autumn but they were all of a very high standard and included an a half length fifth in the Group 1 George Ryder stakes. Has had two barrier trials in preparation for this race, winning the latest one and has won four from six first up runs. Should get every possible chance from draw.
Odds: $4.40
4. Wall Street
In his six run during the Autumn, his best performance was his second up third placing in the Blamey Stakes 1600m. Fancy he’ll need this first up run as he has done in his past few campaigns.
Odds: $17.00
5. Maluckyday
Ran second to Americain in the 2010 Melbourne Cup and back that up with a short campaign in the Autumn of 2011. Has only had the one run since – almost 12 months ago to the day when eighth (beaten 4.4) in the Chelmsford Stakes Will need this one plus a few others before seriously entertaining him as a legitimate chance.
Odds: $31.00
6. Midas Touch
Another who hasn’t seen much of the racetrack in the past year having had only two starts. One in February (fifth in the CF Orr) and three weeks ago when running last in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star. Later.
Odds: $61.00
7. Niwot
Proven stayer whose last campaign culminated in well deserved victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup. His last five wins have all come at distances of 2000m or beyond and whilst he can put a cheeky run in first up, will wait for him later in the Spring.
Odds: $81.00
8. Luckygray
Western Australian visitor who faced a heavy track for the first time last start when making his Victorian debut in the Group 2 P B Lawrence, where he finished fourth, beaten 1.7. He lost no admirers that day and back on better going could be in the finish. Draw adds a few points to his price.
Odds: $4.00
9. Eagle Falls
Seven year old who tackles the 1400m for the first time. He did have a crack at the mile a few times earlier in his career but since, hasn’t ventured past the 1200m mark. Just held is ground last start in Sydney when competing in the Starlight Stakes.
Odds: $19.00
10. Rekindled Interest
Was scratched form the P B Lawrence here a fortnight ago due to the Heavy conditions. A horse with a tonne of natural ability and generally produces a run fresh. The 1400m should suit ideally and provided Arnold can guide him into some space from the draw as they turn for home, expect him to be finishing hard.
Odds: $7.00
11. Green Moon
Promising stayer who won the Newcastle Gold Cup and backed that up with a second placing in the Caulfield Cup last Spring. Only had one start in the Autumn, registering a win in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes. His goal this Spring will be the Cup so expect whatever he does here today, he’ll improve on. One to watch very closely from a Cups perspective.
Odds: $8.00
12. Second Effort
Took out the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes under WFA conditions last start but that was on his preferred wet track conditions. Might found it a bit harder on a drier track.
Odds: $13.00
13. Sanagas
An American horse that has been bought to Australian by the BC3 Thoroughbreds. Won the Group 1 Hollywood Cup in November last year and has only had the one run since, finishing last of six (beaten 2.8) in the Group 2 San Marcos Stakes. Trained by the master Bart Cummings so expect him to have his supporters.
Odds: $41.00
14. Happy Trials
An honest galloper who, despite having only won 3 from 24 starts, has produced some good efforts in big races. He won first up three weeks ago in Adelaide carrying 58.5kgs the distance should suit. The WFA will not however and he’ll be giving most of these a start as they swing for home.
Odds: $13.00
15. Mister Milton
Has only the one win to his name from fifteen starts, that being a 3yo Open race in January of this year. Has had to starts this time in for a ninth (in the Sir John Monash) and a fifth (in the Group 3 Bletchingly) both at WFA. On those two efforst, hard to seeing him winning here.
Odds: $51.00
OVERVIEW
Luckygray and Heart of Dreams to push forward from their wide gates with Sincero and Wall Street settling handy. There’s a lot to like about Sincero. His first up record, his performances at WFA in the Autumn his barrier draw here, his barrier trials and most importantly his current price of $4.40. Rekindled Interest has a big race win in him and might just get a cushy run from his gate and not have to be ridden to far back. Plenty to like about him at the $7.00.
