Prior to this race, The five year old gelding had two career starts; finishing 16th and 7th, and earned just $270 in prize-money.
After drawing a wide barrier, Ruary Mac was paying a staggering $193.50 (Top Tote Plus) to notch his first career win.
Punters who studied his form had little reason to believe that he could even place, let alone win the 1175m sprint.
However, there were six crazy punters who backed Ruary Mac for the win, five backed him each way, and four backed him to place ($33.90). Not a bad return for all 15 punters!
Ruary Mac’s shocking win
Another classic fairy tale that comes to mind was when veteran warhorse Zavite caused a major upset in the 2011 Ranvet Stakes with the 100-1 shot running down Caulfield Cup winner Descarado ($3.50) to take home the Group I by a half-head.
