Punters have already singled out a couple of runners who they think will win the best race the Northern Territory has to offer, the Darwin Cup (2000m), to be run and won on Monday.
Lieder is a former Godolphin galloper who had a stint in Queensland with Steve O’Dea before being sent to Michael Hickmott with an eye firmly on this race. His lead ins have been good and the punters agree, backing him into $4.60 from $5.00.
The clear favourite is Billet Doux, who gave his rivals a nice old spanking last time out in the NT Derby. He has been crunched early, into $4.00 from $5.00.
The horse that looks great value is Royal Request at $5.00. He is a proven performer in the Darwin Cup and his win last time out over the mile was won as if it was a barrier trial. He will eat up the extra two furlongs.
