Plenty of Sportingbet Australia are celebrating big wins after Gai Waterhouse won her first Melbourne Cup with heavily backed favourite Fiorente.
Backed from $8 into a $7 clear favourite, Fiorente was easily the best backed runner in the Melbourne Cup and Sportingbet’s worst result after the leading online bookmaker offered $9 about Fiorente earlier in the week.
“You have to congratulate Gai on a super training effort, we wanted to take on Fiorente after his hard run in the Cox Plate but the best horse won the Cup and we are paying for it now,” Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said.
“Fiorente was clearly our worst result with punters winning more than a million dollars on him.” Sullivan said.
“It’s not bookmaking if you don’t take on the favourite in the Melbourne Cup, this time the punters got it right so good luck to them,”
Punters cleaned-up on Fiorente landing plenty of big bets including $40,000 at $8.50, $30,000 at $7.50 and $15,000 at $8.
Second placegetter Red Cadeaux had some late specking firming from $71 into $61, with one-time favourite Mount Athos finishing third after easing from $10 out to $13.
While plenty of punters were cheering some Cup day plunges missed the mark. Sea Moon disappointed after being backed from $15 into $10 while Fawkner and Dear Demi also missed a place after firming from $21 into $16.
