Melbourne Cup winner Shocking is set to start as the 2010 Caulfield Cup favourite after a sustained betting move at Sportingbet Australia saw him shorten from $7.50 to $5.50 in the past 24 hours.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said the Mark Kavanagh trained five year old was clearly his worst result and he expected Shocking to start as outright favourite tomorrow.
“We took a bet of $150,000 to $25,000 each way on Shocking and that was after we had already tightened him from $7.50 following a wave of bets on Thursday afternoon,†Sullivan said.
“He is outright favourite at $5.50 with us ahead of Metal Bender a $6.00 with Herculain Prince at $6.50.
“I expect the two Sydney horses will get out in the market between now and jump time and Shocking will run outright favourite.â€
Sullivan said there had been good money for a lot of horses at big odds as punters looked for value on the rain affected track.
“Descardo has been $51 to $19, Mourayan has been $31 to $17 and Monaco Consul has been $31 to $21 with punters obviously looking for some noted swimmers away from the favourites,†he said.
“Alcopop has also come back into calculations heavily after many punters wrote him off following his horror draw.
“We took a bet of $70,000 to $10,000 on him and the wet track may well mean the bad gate isn’t such a big issue.â€
