Herculian Prince has been heavily backed to win back to back Metropolitans on Saturday with Sportingbet Australia taking bets to win $50,000 and $20,000 in early betting.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said a number of runners had been backed in a very open betting race but Herculian Prince had been the best backed since the barrier draw.
“We took a bet of $1500 each way at $31 and another bet of $700 at $31 before more money came for him at $26 despite the fact he drew out in 17,” Sullivan said.
“You would think he would try to cross and lead from out there like he did last year and punters certainly think he can give a sight.”
Sullivan said his worst result remained Stand to Gain after the Sydney Cup winner was well backed following his fourth in the Hill Stakes.
“We took bets of $5000 and two of $1000 at $31 following the Hill and the money has kept coming for him and he is now into $13,” Sullivan said.
“He is one of a number of runners who could be helped if the rain arrives as would Hawk Island and Tullamore.”
Lamasery, which could be doubtful if the track stays slow, has taken over as the $5.50 favourite ahead of Trusting at $6.00 and Tullamore at $8.00.
