As is the case most of the year, it was a busy week at the trials and jumpouts across Australia as the Spring Carnival is here, with some progressive types stepping out in readiness for their campaigns.
I’ve looked at the available trials and jumpouts for the week and have come up with a few to follow heading forward over the next few weeks.
RECENT RESULTS: The week started last Friday in the Newcastle Cup where Sweet Thomas was disappointing and he can warm the pine til further notice. Host of runners at Randwick, with Improvement, Happy Clapper and Classique Legend all getting pass marks. Supernova was a bit plain in the Kingston Town but want to see him again. Miss West Coast confirmed her brilliant trial with a flashy first up win at Belmont. Bella Martini was far from disgraced first up and up to 1400m next time, she can win. Van Giz was okay on debut at Wyong on Tuesday behind a Stakes class horse in Regimental Band. Levitate was enormous in defeat at Belmont on Wednesday while Melik confirmed what the eye had been seeing at the trials and he bolted up on debut at Scone on Friday, landing some big bets.
UPCOMING RUNNERS:
Friday September 27
Moonee Valley: Experimentation R4 – Got a slice of double figures early on. Think he’ll only run well
Moonee Valley: Ready Set Sail R5 – Aiming a bit high, but her jumpout was sharp
Moonee Valley: The Bostonian R7 – He’ll get back and charge
Moonee Valley: Assertive Approach R7 – Not sure he’ll measure up
Saturday September 28
Belmont: Validation R1 – Best bet on the program. Should be winning off the trial
Doomben: Plonka R1 – Really surprised he’s friendless in betting. He’ll run well
Doomben: Jonker R7 – It’s a case of any price
Morphettville Parks: Puissance Dusoleil R3 – Gee looks a good price off a very sharp trial win
Rosehill: Amangiri R9 – If she runs up to the trial and the way she looked there, she’ll win
Sunday September 29
Caulfield: Petrelle R2 – Has trialled well (twice). She’ll go close
Caulfield: Island Daze R2 – I’m keen on her running a positive race and is the bet
Caulfield: Special Reward R8 – Was hoping they’d miss him. They haven’t
Caulfield: Harbour Views R9 – Looks a moral at Geelong on Monday
NEW SOUTH WALES
Monday September 23 (Kensington): The babies strutted their stuff on Monday and there were a couple that caught my eye. Starting in Heat 1 with Beyliks, a son of Lonhro who looked impressive in winning. Sat in the 1/1 before J Mac gave him clear air and under his own steam he took the lead and had something in hand on the line. In terms of the fillies, Every Rose was the standout. She won Heat 6 and what I liked about her is that when she was asked for an effort, she responded instantly and the turn of foot was there, which is a good sign for babies so early in the new season. She’s smart and will take beating in the Gimcrack. I was taken by the all the way win of Nitrous in Heat 7. Team Snowden trained colt that led all the way under McEvoy and he looked to move very well in front and looked pretty professional.
Tuesday September 24 (Warwick Farm): You’ll see below there is a horse who I think is the one flying most at the trials, but close behind it is Suave, an unraced four year old for James Cummings. Loved the way he moved in a Hawkesbury trial before going to Heat 2 where he led all the way, spanked them and did it without really being extended. Placed right, he’ll be winning his maiden on debut. Not sure what Team Hawkes have in mind for Kapajack but based on his Heat 5 win, he’s in for a good prep. Beaten for early speed and was back near last on the rail before Tommy weaved his way through and under his own steam won the trial impressively. Diddles is a talented filly that hasn’t raced since the Gimcrack last year when placing. She trialled in Heat 9 and bolted up, leading throughout and under Jason Collett, the filly looked like she had a bit more left up the sleeve.
Wednesday September 25 (Muswellbrook): Wouldn’t be surprised if Cameron Crockett is thinking of resuming Vintage Flyer in a Highway. This mare looks to have come back in really good order and she was impressive in winning Heat 9. On speed throughout and wasn’t extended at all yet still ran one of the fastest times for the morning. She’d measure up in a Highway for sure, a short course one. Speaking of interesting runners, Moshway is one. Formerly with Richard Laming, now with the Cody Morgan stable and she was just about the standout of the week in winning Heat 10. For a mare who looks a stayer, she showed really good zip near the speed under Aaron Bullock and could have won by panels had she been extended. Keen to see where she heads.
Friday September 27 (Randwick): The horse that is flying the most at the trials, IMO, is clearly Signore Fox. Not sure what Team Snowden has in mind for him, but I’ll be keen to back him. This is the third excellent trial he has produced this time in. He ran in Heat 3 where he was in behind the speed and never really clear, but for the few strides he was, he moved with purpose and looks set for a fruitful Spring. The most impressive juvenile from Sydney this week to my eye was Strike, who won Heat 10 in fast time. Beautiful moving colt who did everything right from the front and bolted in with plenty up the sleeve it appeared. I’ll be backing him with confidence if heads to the Breeders Plate.
QUEENSLAND
Monday September 23 (Eagle Farm): The babies were out on Monday at Eagle Farm and Gotta Kiss confirmed she’s one of the better juveniles that we’ve seen to date. Second impressive trial from her. She won Heat 3 and sat off the speed before being asked for an effort and the response was instant as she edged clear late and ran one of the quicker times for the morning. Think she’ll be a leading chance in the Magic Millions.
