Online bookmaker Sportsbet is the first to post markets for the Black Opal Stakes and other majors for Canberra on Sunday.

Here is a look at the main races of the program, leading off with the time honoured Black Opal Stakes for two-year-olds.

Black Opal Stakes

Form colts Mr Cha Cha ($3.20), Ghibellines ($2.80), who were second and third respectively in the Canonbury Stakes last start, dominate the market here. Two-time Randwick winner Alpha Miss ($7.00) Greco ($5.50), from the in-form “Team Hawkes” stable deserve respect.

Canberra Guineas

El Roca, after his controversial withdrawal by stewards last weekend, deserves his $1.60 quote. El Roca will only start here if Warwick Farm is heavy on Saturday. The Peter Snowden trained Malice ($8.00) and Lorna May May ($8.00) will battle out favouritism should El Roca be scratched. Interspersed ($10) will also come into calculations if the Kiwi colt does not run.

Canberra Cup

Some Gai Waterhouse magic will be needed to get early favourite Julienas ($3.00) over the line first. The seven-year-old is first-up with 60kgs. The David Hayes trained Extra Zero ($4.20) is the main danger and Chris Waller’s Lunayir ($5.50) will be suited this trip.

John McGrath National Sprint.

Highly fancied Doncaster hope Messene ($2.10) will be the punters pin-up if he can win the last. The Hawkes runner won his previous five starts before a spell. The Gerald Ryan trained Dances on Stars ($4.00) and David Payne’s eight year old Centennial Park are the only other runners under $10.
