Russian Camelot looks the horse to beat in early betting for this years Cox Plate

The 2020 Spring Carnival will be one of the most unique of the modern era due to the current climate of the world that’s going through Covid 19. But touch wood, racing goes ahead and the Spring Carnival goes off without a hitch.

The best race Australia has to offer is the Cox Plate and here at Justhorseracing, weโ€™ve put together a preview of key runners for the WFA Championship of Australasia.

HORSE TO BEAT:

Russian Camelot

Odds ๐Ÿ’ฐ: $11 at SportsbetBET NOW
Breeding:
Camelot x Lady Babooshka
Trainer: Danny O’Brien
Nationality: Australian
Career Stats: 5: 3-1-0
Min/Max Distance Wins: 1400m/2500m
Career Best Win: SA Derby, May 9 2020, Morphettville, Soft Surface
Dry Track Stats: 2: 1-1-0
Wet Track Stats: 3: 2-0-0
Short Summary: The flagbearer for Australia against a potentially strong International brigade.

Why He Can Win?

The hype around him is the strongest it has been for a horse since Winx. Lightly raced and keep in mind is a Northern Hemisphere bred, so he’s technically still three years old. What he did in the SA Derby was simply stunning and did run past what I think is a Group l winner in waiting Dalasan. Just got so much upside and is a deserving early favourite.

Why He Can’t Win?

He’s a big boy with a big stride, so how will he handle the Valley? It’s a real horses for courses kind of track and is yet to have a look a the iconic circuit. Outside Dalasan, the SA Derby was very thin depth wise and the overall form around him is a bit suspect. The signs are there that he’ll come right on from last prep but until it’s been done on the track, can’t be said definitively that he’ll improve.

THE X FACTOR:

Arcadia Queen

Odds ๐Ÿ’ฐ: $17 at SportsbetBET NOW
Breeding:
Pierro x Arcadia
Trainer: Grant & Alana Williams
Nationality: Australian
Career Stats: 9: 6-0-1
Min/Max Distance Wins: 1200m/1800m
Career Best Win: Kingston Town Classic, December 8 2018, Ascot, Good Surface
Dry Track Stats: 9: 6-0-1
Wet Track Stats: Untried
Short Summary: Now back with her original trainers and is being targeted at her right distance range.

Why She Can Win?

You only have to go back to her 3YO season and what she produced in winning the Kingston Town where she looked to be heading in the direction as the heir apparent to Winx as the best horse in Australia, and did it seemingly with enormous upside to come physically and mentally.

Why She Can’t Win?

Can she measure up to the boys and girls? Much was made of her stint with Chris Waller. The lure of the Everest and Golden Eagle was too good to ignore and in hindsight, they were races she was never going to win. She’s not a 1200/1500m horse. Long time off and it will be very interesting to see how she comes back and handles the trip over.

ONE FROM LEFT FIELD:

Hungry Heart

Odds ๐Ÿ’ฐ: $51 at SportsbetBET NOW
Breeding:
Frankel x Harlech
Trainer: Chris Waller
Nationality: Australian
Career Stats: 3: 1-1-0
Min/Max Distance Wins: 1200m/1200m
Career Best Win: Sweet Embrace Stakes, February 29 2020, Randwick, Good Surface
Dry Track Stats: 1: 1-0-0
Wet Track Stats: 2: 0-1-0
Short Summary: She’s the three year old I’m most looking forward to seeing this Spring.

Why She Can Win?

The world is her oyster I think. I think she’ll dominate the Princess Series in Sydney and win the Flight Stakes and with the 3YO Filly weight, she’ll only carry 47.5kg. There is no standouts on paper when it comes to the nominations for this race, so IMO the race is there for a three year old to stand up. I think she’s a leading candidate.

Why She Can’t Win?

It’s very difficult for a 3YO Filly in this great race, but in recent times, Yankee Rose ran third in the 2016 Cox Plate and in 2006, Miss Finland should have won. But Chris Waller is a very patient trainer, especially with these kind of horses, and looks after them, so even with a dominant Flight Stakes triumph, I’d say unlikely more than likely she would come to Melbourne.

ONE AT STUPID ODDS:

Nettoyer

Odds ๐Ÿ’ฐ: $81 at SportsbetBET NOW
Breeding:
Sebring x Cleanup
Trainer: Wendy Roche
Nationality: Australian
Career Stats: 31: 6-1-6
Min/Max Distance Wins: 1600m/2040m
Career Best Win: Doncaster Mile, April 4 2020, Randwick, Heavy Surface
Dry Track Stats: 16: 3-1-3
Wet Track Stats: 15: 3-0-3
Short Summary: $81 for a recent Group l winner seems a bit on the silly side.

Why She Can Win?

She’s a track/distance winner from Manikato Night 2018 and scored a great win in the Doncaster during the Autumn, beating some top class animals in the process and last time she was at 2000m, she ran a very good fourth to a high class animal, Addeybb. Wendy Roche has said that a Cox Plate start is on the agenda for her mare so this wouldn’t be an afterthought run.

Why She Can’t Win?

She’s very hit and miss at times. Was brilliant in the Doncaster but a week later was awful in the Coolmore Legacy, albeit she had excuses. She’s seven years old and this would take a clear personal best to even measure up to the likes of those high up in the market.
