On paper, old GENTLEMAN MAX (Zariz-Lionette) should be a $2.30 chance to win the Cootamundra Cup this afternoon.
But he wont be.
Instead the old boy, who just turned 8, will start around $5.10 and that price is worth taking. Hmmmm, or is it?
He’ll get out because of his racing record. He’s started 125 times and won 16 races. He’s placed another 37 times and amassed over $370,000 in prizemoney.
But form pundits note one thing, an anomaly that will blow his price out.
Gentleman Max has raced 62 times on Good tracks – and has never, ever won or come close! Yep, read it again.
He’s had 62 starts on Good surface – and is a duck egg, best efforts have been some bush placings a handful of times.
Today at Coota, in the Cup….it is a Good 4.
So, can he finally overcome a massive historical deficit against him and get the chocolates today? Yes he can.
A month ago he was transferred to the stables of Keith Dryden, he of Handle The Truth fame, and in two starts under Dryden, Gentleman Max has shown a renewed zest for racing placing in the city – on a wet track – then beaten 3 lengths at Canterbury when 6th – on a Good track.
Today represents a huge drop in grade so $5 or so is a very, very good price.
Still, that 0-62 record is hard to look past!
