French trained Americain firmed from $21 to $11 for the 2010 Melbourne Cup following his Geelong Cup victory and Sportingbet Australia punters were obviously impressed with one placing $5000 on him at $11.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said there was a stack of money for the import following yesterday’s win.
“Americain clearly impressed a lot of punters with a heap of bets coming for him including one to win $50,000,” Sullivan said
“Clearly the horse is capable of carrying weight and he will get a nice drop for the two mile event no matter what.
“He is now into third favourite behind Shocking and So You Think so we are happy to keep laying him for the Cup as it is a big step up from Geelong.”
One Sportingbet Australia punter looked like he’d made a smart investment when Count Encosta loomed up to win yesterday’s race after he invested a Melbourne Cup bet of $2000 on the Patinack galloper at $251.
Sullivan said it could still prove to be a smart bet.
“Count Encosta is struggling to qualify but he gave me the impression he’ll stay all day,” Sullivan said.
“If they press on and he can pick up first or second in the Lexus Stakes he’ll sneak into the race as a lightweight chance.”
