Since 1922, the Cox Plate has been one of the most important horse races in Australia. It’s not all about the horses however, with the fashion and culture surrounding the Cox Plate equally important to many people. Cox Plate fashion can be both bold and traditional, with women and men both getting dressed up for what is one of the most exciting days in racing.

Cox Plate fashion can be bold, but it is important to respect the traditions of classic racewear that has long been associated with the event. The classic roots of the Cox Plate are still evident in the fashion of the field, with head pieces as important as ever and classic feminine dresses still widely popular. However, Cox Plate fashion has also entered the 21st century, with bold styles and bright colours popular over the last few years.

For men, Cox Plate fashion can be surprisingly varied, although fitted suits with a shirt and tie are expected. While subtle printed shirts and accessories such as hats and scarves can go a long way towards brightening up a man’s outfit, there is an overarching corporate aesthetic followed by the majority of men on the field. Fashion is an important part of the Cox Plate, and adds a lot to the colour and atmosphere to the racing day.
