The best race carnival the Mid North Coast in New South Wales has to offer kicks into full swing this Wednesday with Ramornie Handicap Day at Grafton. The $150,000 Listed feature has attracted a quality field of 18 runners, with a couple of Sydney mares, I’ve Got The Looks and Bound For Earth, looking the two hardest to beat. The weather is fine, the track is soft (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:24pm) : Winning Edge Presentations Maiden Plate 1000m: Form Guide
Back Me: These maiden races during the Carnival are usually either won by horses trained in the city or horses on debut with solid trial form. I think a debutate will greet the judge here in the shape of the Neil Godbolt first starter Saaher (Best Odds: $4.00) Formerly trained by Team Hawkes who trialled this time last year at Rosehill and won comfortably. Hadn’t been sighted since then, but did trial well for Godbolt at Taree recently. Draws well, Colless on board…looks the one.
Big Danger: Rapier (Best Odds: $9.00) resumed at Newcastle a couple of weeks back over 900m and worked home well late when running third to All Day Baby, beaten just over four lengths. Looks suited by the rise to 1000m, fitter, draws well and should prove hard to beat.
Roughie: Portatorio (Best Odds: $4.40) debuts here for Jenny Graham and her first starters should always be treated cautiously, especially during a Carnival. Recent Kempsey trial was just fair, but Thompson rides and the stable has a pretty tidy record with first starters.

Race Two (12:59pm) : Grafton Radio Taxis Rural Plate (Class 6) 2200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Really keen here on Platinum Jack. (Best Odds: $3.60) His two runs this time have been pretty good IMO, starting off with an unlucky effort at Canberra before going to Gosford and arguably he should have won there but unfortunately the rider lost the whip halfway down the straight and he just missed out on victory. Looks ideally suited up to 2200m, Reith is riding very well at the moment and is a proven city performer, so with lucky from the gate, he should just about take care of these.
Big Danger: Dropping back to this level should suit Bingo Bobby. (Best Odds: $26.00) He ran last time out in the Grafton Cup Prelude and just pulled too hard behind the leader when sixth to Mullet Man, beaten just under seven lengths. His racing manners are a slight concern, but if he relaxes in the run, he is a definite winning chance, but is heart in your mouth stuff if you back him.
Roughie: Arrow (Best Odds: $14.00) ran third last time out at Casino in a Class 1/Maiden staying contest, and he just couldn’t quite attack the line with real purpose when running third with a tick under 60kg on his back. He gets some weight relief now, up in trip and Tim Bell takes over, and his strike rate at Grafton is pretty good when he makes the trip.

Race Three (1:34pm) : The Abbey Motor Inn Handicap (65) 1400m: Form Guide
Back Me: Can Dominate (Best Odds: $9.00) has had his last two starts at Newcastle, starting off with a last stride loss at the hands of Lucky Ima Cugat before finishing a close up fifth behind Got Unders, beaten just under three lengths. Drops a bit in depth here, soft gate, Colless on and should prove very hard to hold out.
Big Danger: Steakandbearnaise (Best Odds: $4.20) is the class runner of the field. Trained at Albury by Brett Cavanough, the son of Thorn Park resumes here after a five run prep in the Spring, which ended with a fast finishing third at Randwick behind Resurrect, who at the time was the in form galloper in Sydney in terms of the benchmark ranks. No trials, but given it’s a fair hike from Albury to Grafton, Cavanough won’t be coming here for a holiday. This horse will be wound up and ready to win.
Roughie: Star Of Legs (Best Odds: $19.00) was ridden more aggressively last time out at Wyong when sitting on speed and he stuck to the task pretty well I thought when third to noted mudlark Fireball. He draws the middle here, so it will be interesting to see what leading Mid North Coast apprentice Andrew Adkins does here. Ridden forward or back, he should be in the finish.

Race Four (2:09pm) : Prime Thoroughbreds Handicap (Class 2) 1100m: Form Guide
Back Me: The most interesting runner of the day here for mine in former kiwi Beckham (Best Odds: $3.00). He is now with Liam Birchley after formerly racing across the ditch. He has some really good form behind him, particularly on debut when beating home Bonete, who is also now in Australia and is a city winner in Sydney. No trials to prepare for this, but if he brings his kiwi form here, he should just about win.
Big Danger: Stimuli (Best Odds: $4.20) lunged hard and eventually got the job done to win two starts back at Warwick Farm before going to Rosehill and he couldn’t quite finish the race off when fifth to Lockroy. Back to this level does look suitable, Reith aboard, good draw and the stable loves targeting country carnivaols.
Roughie: Fabry (Best Odds: $6.50) is a pretty consistent galloper for Neil Godbolt who had a strong first prep. He is a faultless galloper when it comes to his racing pattern. He jumps, runs and gives her all. He bolted in on debut last time in, and the good lead here is that Thompson sticks. Should prove tough to hold out from the good draw.

Race Five (2:44pm) : G McMullan Contracting Pty Ltd Handicap (Class 2) 1100m: Form Guide
Back Me: I’m going to give Deceptive (Best Odds: $15.00) one more chance. She is just one of those horses that looks like a superstar at the trials, but doesn’t put it all together on race day. Forget he went around last time out at Muswellbrook where he was ridden too aggressively and he probably wasn’t entirely happy on the shifty surface. Drawn wide here, but there looks to be plenty of speed here, so I’m banking on Thompson hooking him back from the jump and save him for one run, because we have seen that if ridden cold, he can unleash a brilliant finishing burst.
Big Danger: Godolphin galloper Hexagonal (Best Odds: $3.20) started prohibitive odds last time out at Goulburn and despite a couple of nervous moments in the straight her sheer and class got her home. Has to rise a touch in depth, and carries topweight, but a senior rider takes over, draws well, and has the class to beat these.
Roughie: Former Patinack mare Glimmer (Best Odds: $13.00) seems to be loving life on the Coast, but unfortunately for her connections, she just can’t quite crack it for a win. There was merit I thought in her effort last time out at Casino where she just got too far back from the gate and couldn’t quite make up significant ground to win with 59kg. Gets down to 52.5kg now and her recent efforts at Grafton have been pretty good. Definite outside chance.

Race Six (3:19pm) : Tursa Inglis Grafton Guineas (75) 1600m: Form Guide
Back Me: Stepping up to the mile should really suit the Clarry Conners trained Conarchie (Best Odds: $5.50). He toughed it out best to win two back over 1300m at Warwick Farm, then ran over 1400m there last week and looked a touch one paced when running third, beaten just over a length. Firmer track and up to the mile is what the doctor ordered I think, and despite a tricky barrier, he should be right in the finish.
Big Danger: Braces (Best Odds: $11.00) was given a lovely steer from Winona Costin to get the job done last time out in a three year old plate at Taree. Didn’t beat much, but she won well and the time was pretty good in comparison to other races run that afternoon. Firmer surface should help, gate one and Costin sticks, so he rates as a definite threat.
Roughie: Had Kareem’s Edge (Best Odds: $10.00). drew a better barrier, I’d almost have him on top. At the end of last prep he ran a brave fourth in the Country Championship Final behind Artlee, and was fantastic there at huge odds. He was spelled after that and resumed on Ipswich Cup Day in the three year old race and stuck to the task pretty well when running fifth. Despite not winning here, his record at Grafton is pretty good I think, and despite the horror draw, with some luck, he’ll go close.

Race Seven (3:55pm) : Crowe Howarth Ramornie Handicap 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Looks a race in two between I’ve Got The Looks and Bound For Earth (Best Odds: $10.00).. I think at the weights, Bound For Earth looks the one. She worked to the line pretty strongly in the Group l Tatt’s Tiara despite a slow tempo when fourth to star mare Srikandi. After the race, Tim Bell said that dropping back in distance and back to a handicap would suit. She gets that here and Bell sticks. Looks the one.
Big Danger: I’ve Got The Looks (Best Odds: $3.40). won her first two starts in impressive fashion this time in, then went to the Glenlogan Park at Doomben and got stuck wide no cover for the entire trip when eighth to Peace Force. Has been freshened up since that run, and given her recent record, she just looks beautifully suited at the weights and is a definite threat to the top tip.
Roughie: Fare Well (Best Odds: $15.00). hasn’t had much luck in two runs this time in, with the last start being the Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich where she was completely luckless. Hasn’t run since then, but a recent Warwick Farm trial win was pretty sharp. Drawn a terrible gate, but if she gets normal luck, or just a touch of it, she’ll be steaming home late.

Race Eight (4:35pm): Central Coast Coolrooms Handicap (65) 1700m: Form Guide
Back Me: I think punters can end the day on the right note thanks to the Kenny Lantry trained Stable Surprize (Best Odds: $3.80).. He was given a lovely ride from Rachel King at Newcastle and despite getting challenged in the straight, the gelding proved too good for his rivals. Winona Costin is back on board now and she has a really good association with the horse. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: Here Comes The Sun (Best Odds: $4.20). started big odds last time out at Wyong and attempted to lead all the way, but was no match for Bully Bully late and had to settle for second. Tayla Stone takes over again and she rode the horse a treat two back at Nowra. 52.5kg on his back, should roll forward and give plenty of cheek.
Roughie: Prepared to forgive New Divide (Best Odds: $8.50) for his failure last time out at Wyong in the same race mentioned above given he just didn’t look comfortable around the tight circuit, as well as the bog surface. His form on top of the ground is pretty good and he is horse that prefers bigger tracks, so Grafton should be ideal and Christian Reith is aboard.
