Veteran stayer Cavalryman has been euthanised after suffering a serious leg injury during a race in Dubai.
The Godolphin horse made two visits to Australia. He ran 12th in the 2012 Melbourne Cup and was a race morning scratching last year when he was found to have heat in a leg.
The nine-year-old sustained a serious fracture in his right hind leg during Saturday’s Group Three Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan.
“He was a real character in the yard and was treasured, not only by me, but by everyone here,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor said on the Godolphin website.
“He had a wonderful career and he will be hugely missed.”
Cavalryman began his career in France with trainer Andre Fabre and landed the Group One Grand Prix de Paris in 2009 and also ran third that year in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe won by Sea The Stars.
He was transferred to Bin Suroor the following year. Cavalryman’s wins under his new trainer included the 2013 Dubai Gold Cup and last year’s Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket and the Goodwood Cup.
