On the day Team GB grabbed its first gold medals at London 2012, Olympic Glory proved a perfectly-named winner of the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.
When leading owner Julie Wood reserved four Olympic-related names three years ago, it was a pipedream that one of them would win during the Games, never mind in such a prestigious contest.
The Richard Hannon-trained Olympic Glory had made a winning racecourse debut in early June before running a magnificent race in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, finding only the exciting Dawn Approach too strong.
“I reserved four Olympic names three years ago, but the trouble is, you don’t know how the horses are going to do when you name them,” Wood said.
“I’ve got Gold Medal, who’s yet to debut, Citius, which is part of the Olympic motto and means swifter, and World Record, who debuted yesterday (ninth).”
