It took Frankie Dettori more than 20 years but he finally landed his first Ebor when possible Melbourne Cup contender Willing Foe survived a stewards’ inquiry at York.
The Italian jockey has won just about every major race in Europe but the prestigious mile-and-three-quarter (2800m) handicap had previously eluded him.
Sent off at 12-1 for just his second start of the season, Willing Foe became embroiled in a duel with Irish raider Royal Diamond.
Only a neck separated them at the line and they ended up on the far rail after Willing Foe drifted across, but the connections of the runner-up did not feel hard done by.
“It’s taken 25 years but my day has come,” said Dettori, who thrilled the crowd with his famous flying dismount.
“I thought I had a chance but it’s the Ebor and I have never won it before.
“I knew I would keep the race. I did drift over a bit, but I beat the other horse fair and square. I might get a small holiday (suspension).
“I didn’t have many boxes to tick, but this was one of them.
“I know it’s only a handicap, but it’s a very prestigious race and its always a great crowd here.”
Winning trainer Saeed Bin Suroor suggested the winner could join his Melbourne Cup team.
Although he kept the race, Dettori was banned for six days for careless riding and excessive whip use.
