Italian jockey Frankie Dettori has ended his 18-year permanent association with Godolphin, Sheikh Mohammed’s famous horseracing stable.
Dettori, who has ridden nine English Classic winners for Godolphin, says he needs a “new challenge” but will still compete in the stable’s blue silks on a freelance basis.
Dettori said on Sunday that “Godolphin has been a major part of everything I have achieved in racing and I have loved every minute of it. I feel the time has come for a change.”
Godolphin’s retained riders in 2013 will be Mickael Barzalona and Silvestre de Sousa.
Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, says Dettori “remains a great friend” of the stable.
