Melbourne Cup winner Americain has disappointed in the Group 2 Prix de Barbeville (3100m) overnight, finishing sixth as an evens favourite.
Although he also finished sixth in his seasonal reappearance in the Prix Right Royal (3000m) at Saint-Cloud, he was considered extremely unlucky.
In the Barbeville, he was deemed to have every chance, in the end finishing three and a half lengths behind winner Dunaden.
Racing Post in-running comments state that Americain “raced in midfield, [was] ridden 2f out, not quicken, stayed on closing stages.”
Trainer Alain de Royer Dupre was frustrated by the performance.
“For some reason, today he didn’t deliver,” Royer Dupre told the Racing Post.
His next goal was to have been the Group 1 Coronation Cup (2400m) at Epsom on June 3, but that is under a cloud given his poor run.
