Chris Waller has underlined the tremendous depth to his all-conquering stable with a Lord Mayors Cup bid that equals his Doomben Cup representation for numbers.

Waller has five horses in the Group One Doomben Cup but he has matched that with his second-tier stayers in one of the main events on his home track as Sydney racing returns to Rosehill for the first time in five weeks.

Well on his way to winning another Sydney trainers’ premiership, Waller had 27 acceptors for Saturday’s meeting which has been bolstered with the addition of the Darley Crown and Hawkesbury Guineas.

Despite having three times as many Rosehill runners as rival trainers John O’Shea and Gai Waterhouse, Waller still managed to double the size of his Queensland winter carnival team this week.

“I had five horses go up a few weeks ago, five left this week and there is still another lot to go,” Waller said.

Moriarty is Waller’s only Lord Mayors Cup winner but the import’s victory in 2013 has provided the trainer with a template for Queensland success with the stayer claiming the Brisbane Cup two starts later.

Of his quintet on Saturday, Waller has made Silverball the stable’s No.1 seed in a race where bookmakers are offering $6 the field.

“He’ll be close to our best chance,” Waller said.

“He struck a wet track in Melbourne last start and we decided to take him back from barrier one and it was just asking too much of the horse.”

Silverball stretches out to 2000m in Australia for the first time after 1600m wins at Flemington and Warwick Farm.

Waller will also start Bagman, Our Voodoo Prince, Intimate Moment and Black Jag.

Intimate Moment is the next fancied of Waller’s runners behind Silverball but she hasn’t won for more than 12 months.

“She is a funny horse. She doesn’t show much at home but she turns up and races well,” Waller said.

The trainer could have an even better tip for Rosehill if fine weather continues in Sydney.

“The track will improve slowly but I think we will see a rapid change when the water starts to drain out of it,” he said.

A rating at the high end of the soft range was posted on Friday morning.
