Adam Trinder was no stranger to success at Moonee Valley as a jumps jockey and he has landed a milestone win as a trainer at the same Melbourne racetrack with talented sprinter Valiant Warrior.

Trinder won the Hiskens Steeplechase at Moonee Valley in 2003 and 2007 during his career in the saddle before turning to training in Tasmania after he retired from riding five years ago.

He brought up his first Melbourne winner as a trainer in Saturday’s Ranvet Handicap (1200m) when Valiant Warrior took his record to seven wins from 10 starts.

Valiant Warrior was sent out the $3.70 favourite at his second Melbourne appearance and Trinder said the raced worked out perfectly when was able to take a sit behind Tawteen and Mighty Like before making his winning run.

Under jockey Anthony Darmanin, Valiant Warrior powered to the line to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Mighty Like with Tawteen rallying to finish a short neck away third.

Trinder prepared 51 winners in Tasmania last season and said it was a relief to win a race in Melbourne.

“What he lacks in talent he really makes up for in tenacity,” Trinder said.

“He runs with his heart on his sleeve and he’s a little bulldog.”

Valiant Warrior’s owner Wayne Roser named the horse in honour of his late grandson Christopher, and Roser was on track to watch the horse race to another emotional win.

“The owner’s grandson was unfortunately born premature and spent the first four months undergoing numerous surgeries and unfortunately he didn’t make it,” Trinder said.

“Wayne named this horse Valiant Warrior in his honour and thankfully he’s been able to do him proud.”

Trinder is looking at more Melbourne races for the sprinter which won six of his first eight races in Tasmania before resuming at Flemington last month.

“We’ll try to keep him to benchmark races if his rating is suitable, but there might potentially be a race for him over the carnival,” Trinder said.

“Should we abort the preparation early here, he’ll go back and get ready for the Newmarket.

“He failed at Flemington last time but his record is very good. We’re very proud of him.”
